Notre Dame Football: 3 takeaways for Irish in convincing win over Navy
Marcus Freeman had the Irish defense ready for the triple option
The triple option is not easy to defend. Marcus Freeman and the defensive unit sure made it look like it on Saturday against Navy. The Midshipman struggled to move the ball against the Irish all game long.
The Notre Dame defense was able to win most of the battles at the line of scrimmage and push the Navy offensive line back to get in the Navy backfield throughout the game. It is really hard to hold a team out of the end zone for four quarters and the Irish were able to do that against Navy. Throw in a safety for the Irish as well and the Notre Dame defense played really well overall.
The Irish veterans on the team already knew what it was like to play Navy since they have gone up against them in years past. With Notre Dame not playing Navy last year meant some of the younger players for the Notre Dame defense did not know what to expect, but Freeman and the rest of the defensive staff really had them prepared for this offensive scheme and it showed today.
The Marcus Freeman era may have started off a bit rocky to some in the first few games, but he really has done a good job the rest of the season, at least so far.
Freeman is an excellent recruiter and is only getting started at Notre Dame. The future is very bright for the Notre Dame defense for many years to come with Freeman leading that side of the ball.
