3. Big Ten (9)

What a season it’s been for the Big Ten. Who would have thought that Michigan would be the team to come out of the conference for the first time in 17 years? Definitely not me.

Ohio State, the usual champion, was upset by Michigan in the last game of the season which clinched the East for the Wolverines. The Buckeyes are still headed to a New Year’s Six bowl despite not winning the conference, facing Utah in the Rose Bowl. Michigan will be in the playoff, facing Georgia in the Orange Bowl.

One other team is headed to the New Year’s Six from the Big Ten as Michigan State will face Pitt in the Peach Bowl as Mel Tucker did a fantastic job of turning the Spartans around quickly.

Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Purdue all made an appearance in the rankings this year, too.

Here are the nine bowl-bound teams from the Big Ten:

  • Ohio State (Rose Bowl) vs. Utah on Jan. 1
  • Iowa (Citrus Bowl) vs. Kentucky on Jan. 1
  • Penn State (Outback Bowl) vs. Arkansas on Jan. 1
  • Michigan (Orange Bowl) vs. Georgia on Dec. 31
  • Wisconsin (Las Vegas Bowl) vs. Arizona State on Dec. 30
  • Michigan State (Peach Bowl) vs. Pitt on Dec. 30
  • Purdue (Music City Bowl) vs. Tennessee on Dec. 30
  • Maryland (Pinstripe Bowl) vs. Virginia Tech on Dec. 29
  • Minnesota (Guaranteed Rate Bowl) vs. West Virginia on Dec. 28

Michigan finally broke through and is representing the conference in the playoff for the first time ever, but will the Wolverines be able to keep pace with an elite Georgia team?
