Georgia Football: 3 way-too-early breakout candidates for 2022
By Kathryn Rose
3. Smael Mondon, Linebacker
The losses at linebacker for Georgia are simply absurd. Nakobe Dean and his reign of terror on SEC backfields is ending, but other big names like Channing Tindall and Quay Walker are gone as well.
What’s left is a giant weapon that fired all its ammo in 2021 that looks. Looks emptied, anyways.
With Smael Mondon as one of the big contributors ready for 2022, there still might be some bullets left. Mondon will step into Nakobe Dean’s position in the middle, and he’s certainly got the athleticism to keep the talent dropoff minimal. At 6-3 and weighing 220 pounds, with a long, explosive frame, he’ll be as good in pass coverage as he will be at run stopping.
Mondon was a top class of 2021 prospect, but didn’t see the field much as true freshman, as he played on special teams for the most part. Yet, he has tremendous upside, and will be a force in the future against SEC defenses.
