Kirby Smart still has one thing to achieve

You might call me crazy to have Kirby Smart on a list of college football head coaches with something to prove, but if Smart is going to be compared to Nick Saban, he’s going to be held to a higher standard.

I truly believe, as do many Georgia football fans, that the next great college football dynasty is possibly being built in Athens. Nick Saban isn’t going to coach forever and the next closest thing is Smart, who has now won an SEC championship, as well as a national championship.

But one thing Smart and Georgia football hasn’t done these past few years is to win an SEC championship and a national championship in the same year and that’s the task remaining.

That’s really the ultimate achievement in college football nowadays. We have now seen three different teams since 2011 win college football’s national title without winning their own conference — the SEC.

And while it was an awesome achievement for Georgia football and its fans, if Smart is going to be viewed as on par with the best coach in college football (Saban), he has to complete the SEC/national title sweep.
