5 former college football powerhouses that could be “back” in 2022
2. LSU Tigers (2021 record: 6-7)
Not many programs can win a national title and then two years later part ways with their head coach, but LSU is not most programs.
LSU won a national title in 2019 under Ed Orgeron, but since then, the Tigers have been somewhat disappointing and many believe it’s because Joe Burrow carried that team along with Joe Brady and Dave Aranda and all three left following that season, but who’s to say?
The Tigers parted ways with Orgeron following a 6-7 season which concluded with a bowl loss to Kansas State and they went out and hired Brian Kelly away from Notre Dame. Power move.
That hiring showed that LSU is serious about winning — and winning now. Kelly comes in with the nation’s 12th-best recruiting class and 14 key transfers, including Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels who should lead this team back to the promised land. Couple Daniels with a head coach who’s fresh off five straight 10-plus-win seasons (including two playoff appearances), and you have a serious contender.
Kelly has one heck of a roster in Baton Rouge for 2022 so anything less than SEC title contention is just head-scratching.
