SMU

You might be wondering why SMU is on the list. The Mustangs went 8-4 last season and probably aren’t going to be confused for a national title contender anytime soon, but this 64-team tournament is a different animal.

Tanner Mordecai is one of the most talented quarterbacks in all of college football and threw 39 touchdown passes last season. He’s the X-factor that will give the Mustangs a chance against just about any team in the country, plus last season, even though they lost four games, three of the four were by a single possession.

SMU got blown out by Cincinnati but when you think about where this team would be seeded (12-13) it would be dangerous.

Of course, teams seeded in that range are going to be flawed. But matched up with the right top-25 team (4 or 5 seed) and SMU is more than capable of pulling an upset and would be a great candidate to be the annual 5/12 winner in college football’s version of March Madness.
