4. Oklahoma State Cowboys (2021 record: 12-2)

Mike Gundy was close to finally winning a Big 12 title and getting Oklahoma State over the hump, but Dave Aranda and Baylor had other ideas.

Oklahoma State fell short, losing to the Bears in heartbreaking fashion in the title game before earning a berth in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. The Cowboys came back to beat the Irish who were led by new head coach Marcus Freeman to earn their 12th win of the season which was a breakout season for Gundy and Co.

Are we expecting the Cowboys to replicate that success in 2022?

It shouldn’t be expected especially since Spencer Sanders seems to have reached his ceiling at quarterback, the run game doesn’t have a clear lead back, and the defense is losing a handful of important contributors from a 12-win team that proved to have one of the Big 12’s stingiest defensive units.

The Cowboys may take a couple of steps back, especially with a tough road schedule in conference play at TCU, Baylor, Kansas State, and Oklahoma.

If you’re expecting 10-plus wins again, maybe adjust those expectations a bit.
