2. Trevor Penning, OT, Northern Iowa

With Aaron Rodgers back with his new deal, the Packers are going to need to make sure they keep him upright and off the turf as much as possible. Trevor Penning could be the selection with keeping his jersey clean for the foreseeable future.

There are some questions with the Packers’ offensive line group heading into the 2022 season. Star left tackle David Bakhtiari will be a full season removed from his ACL injury, so should be good to go this upcoming season. Versatile lineman Elgton Jenkins tore his ACL late in the season, so most likely will not be able to go right away to start the season. Billy Turner was released as well, so there are spots to be had on the line.

The Packers do have depth with guys like Yosh Nijman, Royce Newman, and Jon Runyan Jr., but those are more guards than tackles right now in their careers.

Penning is known as a big and physical guy outside on the edge. Lots of people describe him to have a nasty side as well. Being a bit nasty is what you would like to have in your offensive line unit. Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing in at around 325 pounds, he is going to be easy to spot on the field. Do not let his size fool you though as he has pretty good footwork for being so big. Speed is also a key for Penning as well as he ran a 4.89 at the NFL Combine. There is a lot to like athletically about the former Northern Iowa product heading into the draft this weekend.

Penning has played a lot of games in his career starting at left tackle in 31 of his 33 games, so he is comfortable out there. The last tackle the Packers drafted in the first round that came from the state of Iowa turned out to be a great selection in Bryan Bulaga. Maybe Penning can be the next to thrive in a green and yellow jersey in Green Bay.
