Offense

A year ago South Carolina football had four different quarterbacks start games. The rotation of quarterbacks was a big reason why the Gamecocks finished with only 201.2 yards per game passing and averaged a paltry 22.6 points per game. Only 2-10 Vanderbilt was worse in the conference in those statistical categories.

Adding a game changer under center like Spencer Rattler should be a huge boost this season. In his three seasons at Oklahoma he racked up nearly 4,600 yards through the air in his 17 starts. However the turnover bug bit him hard last season, costing him the starting job. A fresh start with the Gamecocks may just be what Rattler needs to get back his game.

Rattler’s mobility in the pocket should transform the offense but he will need help from the cast surrounding him.

First the offensive line must improve. They gave up 31 sacks a year ago and only had six 100 yard rushing games. The good news is all five starters return so a year of experience could help.

Leading SEC rusher in 2020 Kevin Harris is now gone. He will be replaced by MarShawn Lloyd, who missed the entire 2020 season to an ACL injury, and Wake Forest transfer Christian Beal-Smith who had 22 starts for the Demon Deacons.

Wide receiver Josh Vann led the team in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns a year ago. With a better quarterback, Vann should have even better numbers this season. Tight end Jaheim Bell also returns after hauling in two touchdowns in the bowl win against North Carolina.

This offense has a lot of potential to improve. It all will depend on Rattler’s play and if the offensive line can keep him upright.
