6. Texas A&M: Aggies finish No. 5 in playoff rankings again

Two years ago, Texas A&M went 8-1 and had a good case to be a playoff team. The Aggies looked like they deserved to be in the field despite an early-season loss to Alabama, but the selection committee ranked them No. 5 and just outside of the field. That had to kill Jimbo Fisher a bit and he took it out on Alabama in 2021, beating the Tide in a revenge game. This year, I think the Aggies will have another good case, but they won’t win their division and they’ll finish fifth in the final rankings again. So close yet so far.

5. Notre Dame: Irish drop outside of the top 15

Call me a hater or whatever you want, but after thinking it over for a bit, I believe that the Irish are going to take some lumps this season and finish outside of the top 15 in the rankings. They’ll stumble in a couple of games after getting demolished in the opener by Ohio State and they may be 8-4 or 9-3 to finish the regular season, just outside that top-15 range. No New Year’s Six for Marcus Freeman this year.

4. Clemson: Tigers make it back to the playoff

Dabo Swinney lost both of his coordinators after a disappointing Cheez-It Bowl season in 2021 and everyone is just assuming that the reign of terror for Clemson is over. Not so fast. The Tigers are going to be right back atop that ACC with a clean sweep of the conference and DJ Uiagalelei is going to bounce back in a big way. The Tigers will not be held down for long as they make it right back to the playoff.
