Wisconsin Football: 4 possible replacements for Paul Chryst
By Dante Pryor
4. Lance Leipold, Kansas HC
Any coach who can win five games at Kansas will find themselves at or near the top of any coaching list. That goes for current Jayhawks head coach Lance Leipold. What he’s done in Lawrence in such a short time is miraculous. Kansas beat Texas and took Oklahoma to the wire in year one.
This season, the Jayhawks are 5-0 and looking to make its first bowl game since 2008, which was also its last winning season. Leipold makes sense for Wisconsin for several reasons. He is a Wisconsin native, having grown up in Jefferson County. Leipold’s reputation as a coach was formed at Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater, winning six National Championships in eight seasons.
Leipold was a graduate assistant at Wisconsin (1991-1993) with a penchant for winning at out-of-the-way programs. In addition to his success at Whitewater, Leipold turned Buffalo into a MAC contender during his time there. His most vital attribute is his ability to evaluate and develop talent for the system he wants to run.
Jarret Patterson, Kevin Marks, and Tyreke Patterson were developed into NFL prospects during his time at Buffalo. Quarterback Jalon Daniels is playing like a potential All-American this season at Kansas.
Qualifications aren’t the issue here. The question is whether or not Wisconsin is the job that would get Leipold to leave Kansas.
