2023 Big Ten football power rankings after Week 6
7. Purdue (2-3, 1-2)
The Boilermakers have been hard to figure out at times. But they looked impressive in a 25-point win over Illinois. Purdue also beat Virginia Tech. Last week, Iowa eeked out a 20-14 win over Purdue, which will host Ohio State this week. The Boilermakers have had success recently in games like this and they are better than their record shows. At least in my book.
6. Maryland (5-1, 2-1)
Taulia Tagovailoa has been outstanding this season, but he struggled on Saturday and threw two interceptions that proved costly against Ohio State. The Terps had the lead in the second half, before Ohio State scored the final 27 points. I want to see this team beat some upper-echeclon Big Ten football teams — even the likes of Iowa and Wisconsin. They look improved but can they. deliver a 9 or 10 win season?
5. Iowa (5-1, 2-1)
Despite a terrible offense, Iowa just keeps winning. Deacon Hill is completing 37 percent of his passes so far after replacing Cade McNamara as the starter due to McNamara’s injury. Iowa is 107th in scoring offense and averaging just 3.8 yards per carry. The defense is 16th in scoring and only Penn State has scored more than 16 points, but the Hawkeyes also haven’t played another offense that’s anything to write home about. Yet, Purdue did score 44 against Illinois then scored 14 against Iowa, so give credit where credit is due.
4. Wisconsin (4-1, 2-0)
The Badgers only loss this season was on the road against a really good Washington State team. Tanner Mordecai only has three touchdown passes. He also has three interceptions. The offense is turning it over too much at 1.6 times per game, but the defense has been much improved. Wisconsin is allowing 18 points per game and taking the ball away more than twice per outing. Braelon Allen also has 472 yards in five games and is averaging 6.5 yards per attempt, so there’s a winning formula in Madsion, which is why many are picking the Badgers to win the Big Ten West.
