ACC Head Coach Mid-Season Power Rankings
By Caleb Hall
No. 8: Brent Pry, Virginia Tech
Brent Pry has been the ACC coach that has jumped the most on this list so far this year, and his Virginia Tech team is looking better week by week. Pry has been doing the long rebuild with the Hokies, by rebuilding the pipeline states for recruiting and creating a football team the old-school way. The biggest critique for Pry was that he wasn’t winning games. The Hokies don’t have top-tier talent, but they should still be competitive and at least be close to being in a bowl game.
Brent Pry has been winning football games, and they look good in the past few weeks.
After losing to Purdue, Rutgers, and Marshall, Virginia Tech has won 2 of 3 and is 2-1 in the ACC.
Not only did they beat Pitt and Wake, but they beat them in blowout games. Tech beat both Pitt and Wake Forest by 17 points in both games. That is a lot better than losing to Rutgers by 19.
Pry and the Hokies are looking better each week, and if his team continues to play better he will only climb the ranks of ACC head coaches.
No. 7: Dave Doeren, NC State Wolfpack
Dave Doeren has not done a good job at NC State this season, but he’s done enough to get the Wolfpack to enough wins so far this season. Doeren has done a great job with the Wolfpack during his tenure there, but this season has been a different story.
The Wolfpack stand at 4-3 and their best win is a 48-41 shootout against Marshall.
Doeren’s Wolfpack may be in trouble going into full conference play, as they have only won 1 ACC game against Virginia, and have looked extremely vulnerable in the past 2 weeks against Marshall, and getting shutdown 24-3 by Duke. Doeren is a good coach but this season may determine if he is the right guy going forward for NC State. It may be hard for the Wolfpack to make it to a bowl game.
Doeren may be in trouble in the coming weeks if he isn’t careful.
