Mississippi State Beats LSU 34-29

Player of the Game: Dak Prescott- 15 of 24 for 268 Yards, 2 Touchdowns; 22 Carries, 105 Yards, 1 Touchdown

There’s no need to question Dan Mullen and the Mississippi State Bulldogs anymore. Yes, they are legit. Yes, like the rest of the SEC West, they are worthy of being in the Top 25. And all of a sudden, they have now made the case to be in the fight for the SEC West Division title.

In the toughest place to play in college football on a Saturday night, the college football equivalent of playing in the Seattle Seahawks’ stadium, Mississippi State embarrassed the Tigers. It was a three-score game with less than 2 minutes to play before a fluke bad snap by a backup center made it close.

Make no mistake, the Bulldogs dominated the Tigers. They racked up 570 yards of total offense and Dan Mullen out-coached Les Miles. But the story of the night is Dak Prescott.

It’s time to take the junior quarterback as a legitimate Heisman candidate. Prescott had 373 yards of total offense, 268 passing and 105 rushing, for 3 total touchdowns and no interceptions. He did this in the toughest environment in college football and against possibly the toughest defense in the SEC.

For the year, Prescott now has 964 passing yards, 378 rushing yards, and 11 passing touchdowns to go along with 3 rushing touchdowns with only 2 interceptions. And he’s completed 60 percent of his passes, which is good enough.

This is a Heisman candidate, pure and simple. What does any other candidate have that he doesn’t? It’s time to end the dark-horse talk, because he’s right in the thick of the race.

Tim Tebow anyone? It’s obvious Prescott is blessed with playing in Mullen’s brilliant spread option system that won Urban Meyer two national titles at Florida, and there are other superstar playmakers on the offense that help him out, including Josh Robinson and Jameon Lewis.

But Prescott is the leader of this team.

And let’s talk about Dan Mullen.

Let’s not forget that at one point Mullen was on the hot seat last year with the Bulldogs at 4-6 after a 20-7 loss to Alabama. For anybody who’s not aware, that’s the last time Mississippi State lost.

The Bulldogs are now in the midst of a 7-game winning streak, which includes wins against Ole Miss at home and now LSU on the road.

Mullen clearly regrouped the team at that point, and he’s now shown that Ole Miss isn’t the only Mississippi school playing good football.

In fact, Mississippi State right now is more impressive than the Rebels. They have a much better win, and they’ve simply looked better up to this point.

The credit for that goes to Mullen. The Bulldogs are all of a sudden the most relevant in the SEC West race since the Jackie Sherrill days, when the SEC West was actually a bad division. This time, it’s much more impressive.

The Mississippi State defense deserves credit too. Sure, LSU gained more than 400 yards of offense, but MSU shut down that so-called great LSU running game, including Kenny Hilliard and the “Michael Jordan” type Leonard Fournette.

LSU isn’t overrated. They beat a very good Wisconsin team, who looks like the best team in the Big Ten right now. So don’t short-sell this win.

Now, Mississippi State has a great chance to make even more noise. Being in the SEC West, their schedule doesn’t get any easier. The Bulldogs have a bye week before they face Texas A&M and Auburn in back to back games, and there are road games against Alabama and Ole Miss later in the year.

But Texas A&M and Auburn are at home, so by mid-October, there’s a very good chance Mississippi State could be a Top 10 team. At least for the next two weeks, we don’t have any questions about these guys.
