Ohio State Coach Urban Meyer Throws His Headset

Urban Meyer gave us all some sideline entertainment in the Sugar Bowl Thursday night here.

This came as the Ohio State Buckeyes were up on the Alabama Crimson Tide 34-28 and had to punt. What looked like a roughing the punter and would have given Ohio State a first down turned was called as a running into the kicker penalty by the ref, which is why Meyer got angry.

It was not going to give the Buckeyes the first down.

Then he threw his headset. But the best part was he looked like he was throwing it at somebody in particular. Notice he didn’t throw it down or throw it to the side in anger.

He threw it as hard and as high as he could. Maybe he was giving it to a lucky fan in the stands.

But the anger does bring up a larger issue. What is the criteria for roughing the kicker vs. running into the kicker?

We have seen no consistency in the rules, and it’s hard to blame the refs for being inconsistent when college football, and even the NFL, have never been explicit in the difference.

What is clear is that it’s time to get rid of judgment calls with it.

But if there are more headset throws like Meyer’s, maybe not.
