The Texas A&M Aggies received a huge commitment on Thursday night from five-star quarterback Tate Martell.

Tate Martell (Las Vegas, NV. Bishop Gorman) committed to Texas A&M on Thursday evening and gives the Aggies their signature recruit for the 2017 class.

Martell also happens to be the first commit of the 2017 class that could be a top-five class in the nation with Martell now helping recruit other five-star recruits like his adopted brother and five-star receiver Tyjon Lindsey into following him to College Station.

The 5-11, 180-pound quarterback is the nation’s No. 12 overall recruit, No. 1 dual-threat quarterback and the No. 1 recruit in Nevada, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Martell picked Texas A&M over USC where Martell once committed to current Trojans head coach when he was the head coach of the Washington Huskies the summer before he entered eighth grade. USA Today’s Nicole Auerbach has a tremendous profile on Martell you should read about his life as a quarterback destined for stardom.

Texas A&M continues to reap the benefits of Johnny Manziel despite the former Heisman Trophy winner two years removed from being at the center of the college football universe. The comparisons will continue to be made between the two diminutive signal-callers both for their on-field ability and their charisma.

“There’s the comparison with us some, Martells said, via Brian Perroni of 247Sports. Both of us are probably a little shorter than the prototypical quarterback. People have said it about the two of us before, even before I visited A&M.

Martell has heard the comparisons and knows they’re expected because he saw Kyler Murray get the same treatment last year when he committed to Texas A&M.

“‘Who’s the next coming of Kyler Murray?’ Kyler Murray is getting the whole Johnny Manziel comparison now and I’m getting that a bit as well. People always try to find the next whoever. People compare us but I think I’m just my own player. I want to be the first me.”

Martell threw for 2,537 yards with 40 touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing for 433 yards (5.9 ypc) and five touchdowns on 73 carries last year as a sophomore.
