Tulsa fans should be happy with a win after the Golden Hurricane finished with a 2-10 record last season. According to Kelly Hines of Tulsa World, “Tulsa was victorious despite turning the ball over four times and not recording any takeaways.” Clearly, the Tulsa defense must improve over the course of the season.

Looking ahead to the New Mexico game on September 12. The Lobos under Coach Bob Davie have improved every season. The Lobos defeated Mississippi Valley State 66-0 and gave them a heavy dose of the running game. Tulsa will need to key on stopping the run. Tulsa will need to focus on stopping Daryl Chestnut who put the ball in the end zone twice against Mississippi Valley State.

With the Oklahoma game being the week after the New Mexico game Montgomery will have to make sure the Golden Hurricane are focused on the Lobos. Tulsa has proven that they can win in a shootout, now the focus will have to turn to finding a way to stop a strong rushing attack. Tulsa fans will get a look next Saturday if the defense is progressing as quickly as the offense appears to be progressing.

Conference play does not start until October 3, Tulsa needs to avoid injuries to have a shot at getting enough wins to go bowling. A bowl game would be a big step in the right direction for a team that has struggled the past two seasons. The win against Florida Atlantic did one thing, it got people excited about what is next for Tulsa.
