The Northwestern Wildcats are hoping to return to Wrigley Field soon to play another football game.

Wrigley Field is home to the best team in Major League Baseball with the Chicago Cubs off to a torrid pace to start their 2016 MLB season. And now, the Northwestern Wildcats are hoping they can capture some of their magic and play a game in the Friendly Confines in the near future.

Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips tells the Chicago Tribune they want to make it happen and the Cubs want to make it happen but it’s up to the Cubs to ultimately seal the deal.

"“We’re anxious to get something done.” Phillips said. “I’m close with those guys, I talk to (Cubs Chairman) Tom (Ricketts) all the time. Everyone is motivated to do it. It’s really on their timeline.”"

Ongoing renovations of Wrigley Field and the surrounding areas could complicate the timeline but Phillips is hopeful of playing a game inside Wrigley in November of 2017.

Northwestern is already scheduled to play rival Illinois at Soldier Field that month, so we won’t get a rematch of the 2010 game that saw both teams playing in the same direction. The dimensions of the field didn’t allow enough room beyond one end zone so it added to the uniqueness of the game.

Hopefully, the anticipated 2017 game will be able to make it work for a traditional football game, but even if not, seeing two teams in the baseball chapel that is Wrigley Field will be awesome for fans of Northwestern and the Cubs.
