Maybe it’s the proximity to the glorious debauchery of New Orleans. Maybe it’s money. Either way, LSU football may be selling beer in Tiger Stadium this fall.

According to the New Orleans Times-PicayuneLSU Tigers’ AD Joe Alleva is currently in talks with the folks at the SEC to build a beer garden in Tiger Stadium. The LSU football beer garden will supposedly be located between the club and suite levels.

Of course, there are myriad arguments on both sides of the issue. The SEC does not allow alcohol sales at sporting events except in private areas, so I’m not sure how LSU is going to get around that little bit of regulation. There is also the issue of carding to ensure that underage students won’t have access to alcohol. But honestly, the lines will be long and the beer will be overpriced. Those two factors will probably put a damper on most of the college kids drinking at the stadium anyway.

Proponents state that the beer sales will bring much-needed revenue to the football program. The University of Texas started selling alcohol at their football games and generated an impressive $3.1 million from alcohol sales. Ohio State pocketed a cool $1.1 million in its first season of beer sales at home football games. LSU has a reported revenue of about $130 million, so an extra $3 million would be a nice boost.

If it’s anything like the prices at the stadiums here in the Atlanta, the prices will be roughly equivalent to the GNP of a small African nation. This alcohol-induced extortion means a great deal of revenue, however. It should also make the boring, schedule-filler games like Troy that much more fun, because you can play drinking games while waiting for the Tigers to score again.

Besides, Louisianans enjoy hooch in any form, and enjoy football beyond sense or reason, so why not combine the two things? So go, for it, LSU. Make your stadium even more awesome for 2017. That way, even if the Tigers have another 9-4 season it won’t be so painful.
