Converted sophomore cornerback Trevon Diggs is due for a big season with Alabama football in his first year on defense.

Alabama sophomore cornerback Trevon Diggs started his career with the Crimson Tide at wide receiver. Diggs was originally a four-star recruit from Rockville, Md., that committed to Alabama in 2015. However, this is not the first time that he will work on defense.

Last summer, he spent the offseason developing his skills on both sides of the ball. Yet, he spent more time on offense during the actuall 2016 season.

According to AL.com, Diggs is being given the chance to prove himself at a position where the Tide could be thin moving forward. He also brings some size and athleticism to the cornerback position. At 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, he’s is much bigger than most cornerbacks in college football.

Diggs will get the chance to work with defensive backs like Minkah Fitzpatrick and Tony Brown to develop his craft moving forward. With Fitzpatrick and Brown, along with senior cornerback Anthony Averett likely gone after the 2017 campaign, the sophomore could be a huge piece of the secondary puzzle moving forward for head coach Nick Saban.

The Maryland-native got most of his action last season in games against Kent State and Kentucky. Against Kent State, he caught three passes for 23 yards and against Kentucky he caught two passes for 14 yards. While his 11 receptions last year do not appear to be noteworthy, that’s the third-most of all returning Tide receivers from 2016.

For Saban to move Diggs from wide receiver to cornerback, there had to have been a great reason. He received praise after the spring game and all signs point to a positive 2017 campaign. Since he could very well be thrown into the fire early as a starting cornerback, he’ll have to be ready for a tough test in Week 1 against the vaunted Florida State Seminoles.

Tide fans will get to see very quickly how well Diggs can adjust to corner. If nothing else, a move back to receiver for him is very possible. Yet, all signs point to good results in 2017 with all the talent on the Tide defense. The young star has a solid group surrounding him that should make his life a whole lot easier. Plus, after the Florida State game, the schedule gets a lot easier so he can build his confidence.

If you’re an Alabama football fan and do not know the name Trevon Diggs, it’s certainly about time that you started watching out for him. He’s already dazzled fans on special teams and occasionally on offense. Now, he just has to do the same on the defensive side of the ball.
