Links at Lunch: Va. Tech, West Virginia Expansion Talk; Pac-12 Doings

Expansion discussion has proven fertile ground for speculation, conjecture and outright panic. The Texas A&M rumors of an SEC move have an August 22 “D-Day,” per I Am The 12th Man. The two coming weeks could set in motion a new domino game, and Bryan Morgan at Onside Kick writes to have your popcorn ready; unprecedented change is on its way.

Should A&M become an SEC member, the conference will need another partner to even its numbers. Missouri, one of the Oklahomas, Clemson, Florida State: these are just a few of the programs mentioned in association with an SEC move. Another is West Virginia, which sits in an interesting place as part of the Big East’s uncertain future. HailWV examines what further expansion means for the Mountaineers. Virginia Tech has also been noted in association with an SEC eastward expanse, but athletic director Jim Weaver and the Hokies are apparently content where they are at as Team Speed Kills reports.

  • There is indeed more to college football than NCAA regulations and conference alignment. The season kicks off in less than a month, and that opening stretch is particular taxing for Arizona. But the benefit of playing at home could mean a great deal, as I wrote at AZDesertSwarm.com. Now with 100 percent more Kardashian Sister references!
  • UA Pac-12 partners Cal and Oregon State suffered disappointing 2010s and need to rebound in 2011. Again, credit belongs to yours truly, this time at Onside Kick. No more shamelessly self-promoting plugs today, promise.
  • Perhaps lost among all the expansion talk today is Arkansas losing arguably the best running back in the SEC. The Razorbacks’ high hopes for 2011 take a serious hit with the talented and unfairly overlooked Davis likely out for the season, per SBNation.
  • Davis was not the only SEC running back to miss practice time Thursday. LSU running Spencer Ware was absent from drills, a cause for concern in an already questionable offensive situation as Death Valley Voice expresses.
  • As if coaching perpetual basement dweller Indiana wasn’t challenge enough, IU head coach Kevin Wilson must also deal with Grade-A jerks. Hoosier State of Mind discusses Wilson’s confrontation with the unprofessional behavior of FOX Sports Radio’s Zakk and Jack Show.
  • Spreads, options and single wings are all the range around college football, but Michael Felder writes the Pro Set remains the “big boy” offense at Crystal Ball Run.
  • Friend of the Blog College Football Zealot has a cool comparison of the SEC programs and the theme music for each heading into this season.
