Links at Lunch: Iowa State’s Max Power, UCLA’s QB Battle, Impact Frosh
By Kyle Kensing
Today’s Links at Lunch lead: Iowa State’s quarterback race. Not the most exciting topic, you say? Well, I will have you know the player tabbed to replace Austen Arnaud has one of the best monikers in college football. Say hello to 2011 Cyclone starter Steele Jantz. ISU will have an uphill climb back to the postseason, and is more likely going to have to scrap just to stay out of the Big 12 cellar. But Jantz could be attending garden parties with President Clinton and Woody Harrelson in no time.
And that’s the end of that chapter.
- Miami football may be headed for a dark age shortly, but that doesn’t mean Hurricane fans can’t continue to conduct themselves in ‘Cane fashion. Sport these duds shown over at Kegs ‘N’ Eggs to let the world know how you feel about Nevin Shapiro.
- The Hurricanes’ troubles have everyone in college football talking, including Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly. Subject of his own scandal this past year, Kelly voiced his opinions on Miami’s per Slap The Sign.
- Rick Neuheisel and staff are quiet on the two (or three)-man quarterback race unfolding in Westwood, per The 110 Report.
- Northwestern’s quarterback situation is a lot less murky. The real question about Dan Persa is how valid is “Chicago’s Heisman Candidate” and his candidacy? Persa is certainly a gamer, and NU is promoting him heavily — literally. The Persa Strong campaign features seven-pound, purple dumbbells and this website hosted at NUsports.com.
- The Pac-12 North is going to feature an interest race in its second tier. Oregon State, Washington and Cal should all be jockeying for the same third spot in the division. The Husky Haul examines how UW matches up with Cal.
- Oregon State’s Pac-12 chances hinge largely on a highly touted recruiting class, and the hits keep coming into 2012. Nationally ranked tight end Caleb Smith officially became a Beaver over the weekend, writes Beaver Byte.
- Freshmen will also have an impact in the ACC. Bryan Morgan breaks down the conference’s top five at Onside Kick.
- Playoff hockey has its beard. Montana State football is introducing the mustache. Many of the highly ranked MSU Bobcats sported mustaches for team media day over the weekend, as reported at The Bozeman Daily Chronicle. MSU aims to repeat as Big Sky champions and make a national championship push in the Championship Subdivision.
