Bobby Bowden appeared on “The Today Show” to stress the importance of prostate cancer and reveal of his own struggles with the disease late into his Florida State tenure. Recruiting is an ugly business, and Bowden waited until after he retired to make his battle public so as not to give competitors ammunition. The columnists at Crystal Ball Run convened to weigh in. Was Bowden right and had he earned certain privacy in decades of coaching, or did he owe his players and recruits (and coach-in-waiting Jimbo Fisher) an explanation?

  • Bowden’s announcement overshadowed the other big news of the morning, the release of Nike’s new line of Combat Pro uniforms, which can be seen at Dr. Saturday. They are certainly…different.
    My thoughts:
The LSU uniform looks a lot like Washington’s, sans the white helmet.

Stanford’s all-cardinal with the black helmet almost reminds me of a 1920s uniform. It’s certainly the closest to something traditional of this batch.

The use of gold in Michigan State’s uniform is interesting given the Spartans are green and white.

Ohio State’s helmet is fantastic. The jerseys and pants? Very high school.

  • Andy Staples’ power rankings at Sports Illustrated compare the top 25 to Academy Award winning films.
  • Week 3 is coming, time to get prepared. Terrapin Station’s Pete Volk breaks down West Virgina and the respective depth charts.
  • Ohio State travels to Miami for the “Criminal Bowl.” This is the Hurricanes’ first outing since dropping a nailbiter to Maryland, and OSU’s first road trip after surviving its own nailbiter vs. Toledo. Scarlet & Game has more.
  • Arizona State is ranked for the first time in three years with a big road trip to Illinois looming. House Of Sparky highlights Brock Osweiler and Dennis Erickson’s press conferences.
  • Cincy Joe of Cowboys Ride For Free breaks down the best running backs in the Dead Conference Walking, Big 12.
  • So what’s up with UCLA? The Bruins are 1-1, but Saturday’s win over San Jose State was ugly as broken down at The 110 Report. It was also indicative of far more than just a perplexingly close game, Bruins Nation writes.
