Navy Fans Paint Arizona State A Mountain
By Kyle Kensing
Ranking near the top of college football in sacks made, Arizona State can defend on the field. One place the Sun Devils don’t defend well, though, is A Mountain. The backdrop to Sun Devil Stadium features a rock formation A that, for the second time this season, was painted an opponent’s color.
It didn’t take a Seal Team Six effort from Navy fans to turn the A navy-and-gold. The Mid supporters followed the lead of Oregon fans who took the Go Green movement in a different direction. Kudos to the Navy crowd, who one-upped the Duck faithful. The addition of “GO NAVY” to the middle of the A takes it to another level.
An ominous sign for the Sun Devils? ASU is a sizable favorite in Saturday’s Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, but was thoroughly shellacked after Oregon took over A Mountain.
My Arizona Desert Swarm cohort Kevin Zimmerman unearthed a public ASU Google document, detailing plans to protect the A on the eve of the ASU-UA rivalry game last month. If the Sun Devils really want to keep trespassers from getting over on their symbol, perhaps they should employ All-American Will Sutton to protect it.
