Typically uniform and helmet updates here on SaturdayBlitz.com are drenched in snark, but Thursday brings wardrobe news with heart.

The Cincinnati football program lost freshman offensive lineman Ben Flick to a fatal car accident over the weekend. Saturday when it hosts Mid-American Conference opponent Kent State, Western Michigan will honor Flick and the Bearcat team with a helmet decal.

UC athletic director Whit Babock tweeted the image Thursday afternoon:

Wide receiver Mark Barr was in critical condition after being airlifted to University of Cincinnati Medical Center after the accident late Saturday night. Teammate Javon Harrison was released from the hospital earlier this week.

The three were driving home from UC’s win over Miami (Oh.) last weekend.

Western Michigan’s show of support for Cincinnati is reminiscent of the memorial Nebraska fans had for killed UCLA wide receiver Nick Pasquale.

Fans and programs coming together in trying times embodies the spirit of college sports, sometimes lost in the omnipresent negativity pumped into the ether. Western Michigan deserves kudos for this small-in-size, but huge in meaning gesture.
