  • Placekicker Mitch Ewald is gone, which is a big loss. Not because he had any great leg, but he was a perfect 8 for 8 in field goals less than 40 yards. He was only 1 of 3 for field goals beyond 40 yards, but I’ve always said that the most important factor in a kicker is that they make every kick they’re supposed to make. He did that. Now, replacing him will be a competition among three walk-ons. Aaron Del Grosso and Griffin Oakes are redshirt freshmen, and Jake Shake could shake things up in the summer when he arrives on campus. At least there’s 3 kickers to choose from, but I usually hate that idea. Kickers are so erratic that when somebody is waiting in the wings behind them, it will dramatically impact their performance in a negative way. With the kicker assured to be a newcomer, expect some serious issues at the beginning of the year.

Punting, however, should be fine. Erich Toth will be a junior, and he averaged 40.6 yards per punt last year on 52 punts, nailing 18 inside the 20 yard line.
