Saturday Blitz SEC Power Rankings Week 5

9. Missouri Tigers, 4-1 (1-0), Defeated South Carolina Gamecocks 21-20 Last Saturday

Perhaps that loss to Indiana two Saturdays ago was just a giant fluke. Maybe South Carolina is that bad. And maybe, the SEC East is so mediocre this year that a team could lose to one of the worst teams in the Big Ten East and still manage to be in the Top 2 of that division.

Whatever it is, the Missouri Tigers are in the driver’s seat of the SEC East race once again as the only team in that division without a conference loss. And they can’t even play offense. Maty Mauk was awful on Saturday, and the Tigers still managed to pull off the upset in Columbia. We’re going to go with our first theory, and simply say that loss to Indiana was a fluke. This is still a good team that had to replace a lot of talent, which would make it prone to having really bad games when you least expect it. We’re not going to hold that against them too harshly.

The Tigers look like they have a great defense again despite replacing all of the weapons on their line from last year. This team looks like it’s going to be right back in contention for the SEC East title again, and Gary Pinkel clearly has a program here, not just a team.
