Ranking Week 6 College Football Upsets

5. Northwestern Wildcats Beat No. 17 Wisconsin Badgers 20-14

Yes, this upset was incredibly shocking, but in a sad way, it was actually due more to personnel issues facing the Badgers than just sheer bad luck, as it was with some of the other upsets on here. And that’s something that never bodes well for the future.

Wisconsin needs a quarterback and receivers desperately. Melvin Gordon carried the ball 27 times for 259 yards and a touchdown. It’s not like the coaches didn’t make sure he had enough touches this time, unlike the LSU game at the beginning of the year. But you need at least some help from your quarterback, and every time they tried to throw just to keep the defense honest, they managed to screw it up. Tanner McEvoy had 1 interception, and Joel Stave had 3 interceptions, combining for 4 interceptions on the game for the Badgers. Regardless of how good Gordon is, those quarterbacks were going to do their part to make sure the Badgers lost.

Credit to Northwestern’s defense for pulling off the upset and really turning the season around after a rough start. And this is an incredibly shocking upset, which is why we have it at No. 5. But it’s shocking because of how bad the Wisconsin passing game is, and that is really bad news for the Badgers the rest of the season.
