Saturday Blitz ACC Power Rankings Week 8

This may seem a bit unfair after the North Carolina Tar Heels played Notre Dame close and beat Georgia Tech. But we’re not ready to read too much into this just yet. Yes, UNC should celebrate its win over Georgia Tech, but we can’t ignore that they still have a losing record and lost to East Carolina and Virginia Tech.

The Tar Heels still have major defensive issues. Larry Fedora’s offense has fortunately been great, and if this team were winning Marquise Williams would have an argument to be a Heisman trophy candidate. But on defense, they haven’t given up under 30 points since their 2-0 start, and they have given up 40 or more in four of their last five games and 50 or more three of those times plus the 70-point surrender to the Pirates. That’s just bad.

And it has to improve if UNC wants to reach 6 wins. Sure, they’re looking much better, but Virginia, Duke, and Miami are still on the schedule, and it’s not like Pitt and N.C. State are easy wins, even at home. So nothing’s guaranteed for this team right now.

And we’re not going to bump the Tar Heels after one close win at home against an overrated team. Not yet.
