Preseason Ranking: No. 9 AP Poll and USA Today Poll

Regular Season Finish: 6-6

The Gamecocks were a preseason #9. For them it all went wrong early. They faced #21 ranked Texas A&M and now forgotten Kenny Hill, who threw for 511 yards against them in that first game at South Carolina.

So what happened? 52-28 was the final score and it reeked of just not being prepared, not only for that game, but for the season. South Carolina rebounded fairly well, winning the next 3, including against 6th ranked Georgia, but then lost 4 out of the next 5. At 6-6, Spurrier’s Gamecocks are barely bowl eligible. A far cry from being the favorites in the SEC West. As for the silver lining in their last game, something to build on, etc? They lost that one too, to their in-state rival Clemson 35-17.
