Saturday Blitz 2014 College Football Awards: Marcus Mariota, Scooby Wright Lead the Pack
Dec 5, 2014; Santa Clara, CA, USA; Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota (8) scores on a 7-yard touchdown run in the second quarter against the Arizona Wildcats in the Pac-12 Championship at Levi
Most Outstanding Player: Marcus Mariota, Quarterback, Oregon Ducks- 254 of 372 for 3,783 Yards and 38 Touchdowns (2 INT); 117 Carries for 669 Yards and 14 Touchdowns
Awards: Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award
This was a little bit closer than the top defensive player of the year, but it still can’t be ignored what Marcus Mariota did all year. We have already listed him as our Heisman favorite, and you can see why here. Mariota’s performance throughout the season was unparalleled, just like his numbers.
Again, 38 touchdowns to 2 interceptions passing and another 14 rushing. That’s 52 to 2! Forget the fact that he plays in a great system. He still has to play well in that system, and that is exactly what he did. Nobody has run the system better than him, and as a result, he is clearly the best player of the year.
Other Finalists:
Melvin Gordon, Running Back, Wisconsin Badgers- 309 Carries for 2,336 Yards and 26 Touchdowns; 17 Receptions for 151 Yards and 3 Touchdowns
Amari Cooper, Alabama Crimson Tide- 115 Receptions for 1,656 Yards and 14 Touchdowns
