7. Boise State Broncos

2014 Finish: 12-2 (Defeated Arizona Wildcats 38-30 in the Fiesta Bowl)

Wasn’t Boise State supposed to fall off the map with Chris Petersen going to Washington? It appeared as if they were on that path early in the season after a loss to Air Force at the end of September.

But at 3-2, the Broncos turned around the season to win their final nine games, capped off by beating Colorado State, winning the Mountain West Conference, representing the Group of Five teams in the New Year’s Six, and then beating Arizona, a Power Five team, in their bowl game.

Sounds like the old Boise State to me.

But what’s most exciting is that with proof the program is in good hands under Bryan Harsin, it also has 17 returning starters, enough talent to offset the loss of quarterback Grant Hedrick. That has to be exciting for the program’s fan base, and they are all aware of that. Perhaps a College Football Playoff appearance could be on the horizon as well.

One thing seems clear, though. It does not look like the Broncos will be knocked out of the college football world of relevance anytime soon, no matter how much the establishment and the big time programs want that to happen. Boise State looks here to stay.
