5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

2014 Finish: 8-5 (Defeated LSU Tigers 31-28 in the Music City Bowl)

Yes, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish had a very tough finish to the end of the season, falling from the national championship race to out of the Top 25 in a matter of weeks. But when you consider the suspensions, the youth on defense, and Everett Golson’s lack of ability to ever settle back into his role, it’s easy to see why they struggled once the schedule got tougher.

Still, they closed out the year with a thrilling victory against a very good LSU Tigers football team, and 19 starters are coming back. Brian Kelly also has another Top 10 recruiting class, his third straight by some metrics but his second out of three years on Rivals with the third being a No. 11 class. Fans have been slowly seeing the pieces in South Bend come together since kelly took over in 2010.

And despite the issue of a two-quarterback system at the end of the year that also included Malik Zaire and could cause problems next year, fans are at least very excited about the prospect of next football season. And they should be.

If the quarterback situation is solved, Kelly will finally have the cupboard full, which includes lots of depth, experience, and talent thanks to recruiting, and his team will be able to compete in the next national championship game.
