For those who do not know history, it is impossible to understand the magnitude of what Fielding Yost did for the sport of college football. Before Yost arrived at Michigan, the Wolverines were already the power of the midwest.
But the midwest was not where the face of college football was. That went to the Ivy League schools on the East Coast. In fact, all of the national champions from when college football began in 1869 up to 1900 were either Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, or Penn with the exception of Rutgers in 1869 and Lafayette in 1896. And those two schools had to share those titles with Princeton.
Enter Yost at Michigan. The Wolverines thought beyond their rivalry with the University of Chicago, and Yost broke the Wolverines into the college football elite winning six national championships and taking the sport national.
Michigan is arguably the most successful football program ever. The success started because of Yost, and he turned the tide of making college football a sport of athletes as opposed to a sport of elites.
Changing the game like that with the success he had is what puts him on this list.
