14. Jim Plunkett, Stanford Cardinal, 1968-1970

Stats: 550-of-992 (55.4 percent) for 7,809 Yards, 63 Total Touchdowns and 48 Interceptions

Record as Starter: 22-8-2, Pac-10 Championship (1970), Heisman Trophy, (1970)

Super Bowl Wins-2

XV-1980-81 With Oakland Raiders (Defeated Philadelphia Eagles 27-10)

XVIII-1983-84 With Los Angeles Raiders (Defeated Washington Redskins 38-9)

Like Montana, Plunkett’s stats are not great. But the guy did win the Heisman Trophy in 1970 and was a three-year starter at Stanford.

Leading the Cardinal to a Pac-10 Championship and having a 22-8-2 record overall has to count for something. But this is another reason rings are stupid. Plunkett was a Heisman winner in college with no national championships.

And then Plunkett won two Super Bowls in the NFL and didn’t even make the Hall of Fame. That’s because people realized that he was blessed to be surrounded by a great team. Still, Plunkett was a good quarterback who could play at both levels, and he showed that pretty well. Also, let’s note Plunkett and Montana are barely staying above water in these rankings.

Imagine how bad the guys behind them had to be in college.
