Before taking on the pressure of succeeding the great Joe Montana in San Francisco, Steve Young had to deal with the pressure of succeeding the great Jim McMahon at BYU. And he did it with ease.
One of the most versatile quarterbacks in history, Steve Young perfected the art of running and throwing better than anybody, although Russell Wilson is getting excruciatingly close. Young won another WAC Championship for the program in 1983 and managed to keep them a major player on the national stage.
Scoring 74 total touchdowns and putting up more than 8,000 total yards of offense in only two full years as a starter was amazing, especially for that time, even if it was in the WAC. And if you want proof that you can’t judge by national championships, BYU won one immediately after Young left. So Young and McMahon are there, BYU has great seasons. They’re gone, they win it all.
