Arguably the most successful and certainly the most innovative football coach in NFL history had a decent college football career as well. Bill Walsh’s college track record was only slightly better than Dick Vermeil’s, but he did coach longer than Vermeil and also picked up a Pac-10 Championship.

Walsh won at Stanford when he was there in the 1970s and chose to go back there after a legendary run at San Francisco, picking up the Pac-10 Championship, a Rose Bowl berth, and a Top 10 finish in 1992. Of course, with two 7-loss seasons after that, things took a downhill turn.

But before that happened, Walsh clearly proved he could succeed in coaching at the college football level. And he fell off in general when it comes to football after that Pac-10 Championship, not just college. Don’t forget he began to consistently whiff when he made personnel decisions for the 49ers.

But this is the last Super Bowl winning coach who did not have elite college football success.
