1. Barry Switzer
College Football Record: 157-29-4 (Oklahoma from 1973-88)
12 Big Eight Championships (1973-80, 1984-87)
3 National Championships (1974-75, 1985)
NFL Record: 40-24 (Dallas from 1994-97)
Super Bowls
Super Bowl XXX, 1989-90 (Defeated Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17)
When you’re ranking the college football success of Super Bowl winning coaches who coached at that level, it is not even close. Barry Switzer towers so far over everybody else even worse than John Wooden did to college basketball in the 1990s.
Switzer may have inherited a pretty good football program with the Sooners, but he took it to levels similar to what they did in the midst of their 47-game winning streak in the 1950s. A legendary career included three national championships, 12 conference championships, and 157 wins in 16 years.
Of course, the lack of integrity in the program was an embarrassing problem at the time that forced Switzer to resign, but he still did not have to vacate any of his wins. His major success cannot be ignored.
Sure, he was just a manager of elite talent in the one Super Bowl he won during his four-year stint in the NFL. But Switzer’s success in college compared to other coaches is unprecedented. For that, he stands atop this list by a long shot.
