Ranked number 1 at the running back position and number 2 overall in ESPN’s 150, Johnathan Gray was destined for greatness, accolades, and maybe a Heisman.
Mulling over offers from SEC schools like Auburn, Arkansas, and the Horns’ hated rival Texas A&M, Gray chose to be the next great back at Texas. Gray, along with Malcolm Brown, were supposed to be 1,000 yard backs.
Since 2012, Gray has only averaged about 725 yards a year with 2014 being his worst, having only one 100 yard game. A torn Achilles in November of 2013 didn’t help either. Just like Oklahoma’s Joe Mixon, the tale isn’t over for Johnathan Gray, but it sure seems like it’s on the downside, with nothing to show for it.
Maybe there’s a future for him in the NFL once he leaves Austin or maybe he’ll break all the rushing records for Texas, either way, Longhorns fans expect more from their 5 star recruits, like the rest of the group before him on this list…
