1. Jameis Winston, Quarterback, Florida State Seminoles
This should be no surprise to anybody who remotely follows college football. It is not a safe bet to say Jameis Winston will succeed in the NFL, but this pro-style quarterback can do absolutely nothing at the NFL Combine to hurt his draft stock.
Winston has shown the clutch gene, leadership abilities, good footwork in the pocket, and a nice deep ball despite ugly form. He also has shown trouble with accuracy every now and then, a tendency to make too many lapses in judgment that cause turnovers, and a tendency to simply be reckless trying to make a play. None of these things can be tested at the NFL Combine or at a pro-day, so who cares?
The fact of the matter with Winston is that his success in the NFL depends on his own character issues, his own intangibles, and the team that picks him and is willing to work to develop him. Everything else is meaningless, including this combine.
If you are a team who needs a quarterback, Winston is certainly somebody worth taking a chance on in the first round to begin building your team around no matter what. All of the questions asked about him can be rectified by good coaching except the character concerns about him.
And the Combine won’t answer any of them.
