3. Bryce Petty, Quarterback, Baylor Bears

As has become very clear, the quarterback position is the least important position at the NFL Combine. That’s not to say that there are not quarterbacks who could make a statement at the Combine. It is to say that you should not use it as any form of barometer for NFL success.

Starting with quarterbacks whose combine means nothing, Bryce Petty comes in at No. 3. There are other quarterbacks ahead of him because, given his use of the spread at Baylor, his mobility and footwork could still be factors. However, his durability and intelligence in the game are bigger factors.

And Petty spent the entire year padding stats against weak teams, so why would we then give him more respect for performing well on raw physical drills with no competition? There is simply no way to measure Petty’s intangibles.

All we can say for sure is that Petty does not come from a pro-style system and never really proved himself against great defenses. A combine is not going to change that at all. And it won’t show us how durable he is either.
