2. Derwin James, Florida State, Safety, 6’2’’ 202 lbs.

And here we go again with Florida State landing yet another top recruit to their defense. James is the best safety in the class and potentially in the country. He has so many strengths and really not many weaknesses, to the point where I am really nitpicking.

James has great size already and will only add mass with time as he physically matures even more than he already is. He already lays the thunder on opposing receivers over the middle and is excellent in run support often destroying backs in the hole. James also has a solid ability to play in the box and make plays by reading the backfield and quickly reacting to what he sees.

The only negative with James is that he can be overzealous at times and over pursue when playing the run and he isn’t a great coverage safety. However I don’t see the second one as a huge problem because he is more of a strong safety and will be in the box more and on tight ends as well. This will allow him to utilize his size and speed advantage against tight ends that he doesn’t have against receivers.

James should be an all conference performer before too long.
