While every sport has produced dynasties, the word is often far too overused. The same holds true in college football.
A dynasty is not simply a great run with a couple of national championships. A dynasty spells dominance over an entire era. And quite honestly, that is harder to find in college football than any other sport.
So the standard for college football dynasties is actually much lower.
When you take into account how far back the sport goes, the fact that for years different conferences played by different rules, and that the controversy over who the national champion was every year leading up to the BCS and even beyond that clouded the sport, finding the greatest runs in college football history is extremely hard. And it is not clear-cut by any stretch of the imagination.

There is no UCLA Bruins, Boston Celtics, New York Yankees, or Green Bay Packers dynasty in college football, at least since the sport has undergone its most basic evolutions.
So these runs pale in comparison to the greatest runs in those other sports, but there are still quite a few interesting runs in the history of this great sport. This list takes into account when the dominance occurred, how many national championships were won during that time, the conferences and schedules the teams played during that time (when some schools played 7 games and others played 11 at the same time, one clearly had an unfair advantage), and the type of streaks that were impressive during these runs.
With that, let’s take a look at the greatest college football dynasties in history.
