Biggest Question: How will Head Coach Derek Mason’s decision to name himself defensive coordinator affect the team dynamic?
Maybe somebody should tell Derek Mason that, while the defense was bad last year, the offense was 1,000 times worse. And in many cases, the defense looked terrible simply BECAUSE the offense could not get anything going for the Vanderbilt Commodores.
With that knowledge, while Mason focusing on taking over the defense is not a bad thing, it raises the question as to how interested he truly is in the Vanderbilt offense. Is he trying to Rex Ryan us but in a classier, less brash way?
That’s what it seems like.
Mason needs to show how his offseason decisions will improve the offense at all. And fortunately, we have that chance with Spring Practice.
Vanderbilt’s spring practice will show Mason’s camaraderie with the players and the team dynamic as a whole in addition to how serious Mason takes the offense. If all of those things pass the eye test, Vanderbilt might have a decent future after all.
If they fail the eye test, perhaps Mason needs to re-evaluate what he is doing.
