Clemson Tigers
Positional Battle: Number one Wide Receiver
Favorite: Artavis Scott
Competitors: Mike Williams, Deon Cain
The Tigers are flat out loaded at wide receiver. There are more players that could compete for the top receiver spot on their team, but Williams and Scott started above them last year, and Cain has more talent than any of those guys. I also do not think Cain would choose Clemson unless he though or was told he had a good shot to play early on.
The early favorite to be the go to guy for the offense is Deshaun Watson’s favorite target last year Artavis Scott. Scott is a smaller breed of wide receiver, listed at just 5’11” and 185 lbs. However he is very smart and has very sharp cuts when running his routes allowing him to gain separation in a short time from the corner. Scott should be the number one receiver next year if he is healthy and on the field.
However his competitors come in the form of two taller receivers, Mike Williams (6’3”) and Deon Cain (6’2”). Williams was a very successful deep ball guy last year and can run for his size. Cain is also big and has solid speed allowing him to be a good deep ball threat, but his just a freshman and has to tighten up parts of his game to see the field.
Williams will most likely start with Scott and I think Cain will see some time, but it may not be right away. Scott however is Watson’s favorite choice and there chemistry is undeniable.
