8. 1991: Tennessee Volunteers Beat Notre Dame Fighting Irish 35-34

You didn’t think we could have a Top 10 list of games involving divine intervention and leave Notre Dame off did you? Of course not.

But the great thing about this game is it shows that, well, Touchdown Jesus sometimes works against the Fighting Irish. Of course, don’t tell Irish fans that Jesus and Moses precede their football program.

Anyway, to the game. The Vols fell behind 31-7 to the Irish, and they were about to kick a field goal to go up 34-7 at halftime. But a blocked kick returned for a touchdown changed the game to make it 31-14.

In the second half, the Vols cut it to 34-28, but Notre Dame had the ball and the lead in the fourth quarter. However, an interception followed by a screen pass that went for six and then the ensuing extra point gave Tennessee a 35-34 lead. Notre Dame marched down the field to kick a game-winning field goal, but in a stroke of bad fortune, Craig Hentrich got hurt at kicker.

So a backup had to come in to attempt a game-winning chip shot. But the kick was blocked, the Vols hold on, the the mystique of Notre Dame was shattered.

Such a huge comeback with two blocked kicks, an injury to a kicker, and one returned for a touchdown, against what was perceived to be the divine team of college football screams divine intervention as much as possible. It happened in this game.
