7. 1984: Boston College Eagles Beat Miami Hurricanes 47-45

We all know this one. The legend of Doug Flutie as he put the Boston College Eagles on the map was incredible. This was not an upset, and there was no major comeback. But it was an exciting game capped off by the memorable Hail Flutie.

Boston College and Miami had gone back and forth until the end of the fourth quarter, with Miami taking the lead late 45-41. Then, with 28 seconds left, Flutie and the Eagles needed a miracle unlike anything that had happened before.

With 6 seconds left and at midfield, Flutie took the snap, rolled to the right avoiding pressure, and chucked the ball down field. It wasn’t even tipped. Boston College came down with the pass in the end zone in a crowd of players, and the Eagles won the game.

The fact that this Hail Mary was thrown by a 5’9″ quarterback and was converted is what makes this story. There have been plenty of Hail Mary passes, but none like this one. And the throw was so pure, we spent Flutie’s entire NFL career wondering where his magic came from.
