Wilton Speight is named the starting quarterback at Michigan
In Jim Harbaugh’s first season back at the collegiate level, his quarterback situation will be a bit different. From the golden boy Andrew Luck, to a three-man battle between QB’s who’ve collectively thrown 87 passes in Ann Arbor.
All of those pass attempts have come from junior, Shane Morris. Morris has combined for 389 yards, zero touchdowns, and five interceptions over the past two seasons. The former four-star has struggled tremendously at the college level but has the upside in terms of experience.
The other two contenders are redshirt freshman, Wilton Speight and true freshman, Alex Malzone. While they each haven’t taken a snap in a real game, Speight has had a year to become acclimated to Ann Arbor and build chemistry with his teammates in practice. He is also a QB who will work in Harbaugh and QB Coach, Jedd Fisch’s offense because he’s a true pocket passer with a hint of athleticism.
In a brief press conference, Fisch spoke on all three quarterbacks and mentioned Speight first. He seems to love what the kid does on the field, but slighted his experience. Speight may not be the future in Ann Arbor, but he will be the starter this fall.
