Steve Spurrier, former head coach of Florida, once said, “Once a Gator, always a Gator.” Florida fans are kind of wishing Spurrier meant in person and not just in spirit. Ever since Spurrier left in 2002, not one head coach has come in and restored Florida to its full golden glory.
Spurrier lead the Gators to two national championship appearances, one win, and six SEC titles. The closest man to achieving Spurrier-level adoration since then has been Urban Meyer, who lead the Gators to two national championship wins. However, his quick-turnaround acceptance of the head coach position at Ohio State after his confusing retirement from Florida in 2010 negated much of the respect he accumulated.
Florida is now searching relentlessly for the next coach that will lead them back to greatness. Will Muschamp wasn’t it; all fans can remember is 2013, when Muschamp and the Gators went 4-8. He was fired mid-season in 2014 after a disappointing loss to South Carolina.
Now it’s Jim McElwain’s turn to head this national championship-minded program. Florida has been slowly losing patience since 2008, so McElwain had better have a solid plan of attack if he wants to keep his job.
