4. The Wide Receiver Corps Looks Good

The arrival of JUCO transfer Dede Westbrook has a lot of Sooner fans excited, and he certainly didn’t disappoint those who believe he will be a star in this offense. Westbrook showed game-breaking speed: he almost scored on a screen pass from Knight and gained 22 yards on a reverse.

If he continues along this path, there’s no reason to doubt Westbrook will be an instant upgrade to OU’s receiving corps and a fantastic complement to Sterling Shepard, who saw limited action today.

Other receivers rose to the occasion as well: sophomore Jeffery Mead led all receivers with three catches for 93 yards (including a spectacular one-handed 48 yard catch), and KJ Young and Durron Neal also played well.

But perhaps the biggest surprise was 6-6, 247-pound behemoth Mark Andrews. Andrews caught two passes for 56 yards, including a long throw on which he nearly scored after breaking a few tackles after the catch. If the coaching staff utilizes him correctly, Andrews will be an absolute matchup nightmare for opposing secondaries, especially in red-zone situations.

Overall, the Oklahoma wide receiver corps looks to be markedly improving. Dede Westbrook is on his way to becoming a bona fide contributor and budding star. If another young receiver emerges, Oklahoma will have one of the best wide receiver groups in the conference, if not the country.
